Crochet Stitches

Here I have condensed all the instructions for the crochet stitches. For more information, or links to videos and pictures, click on the name of each of the crochet stitches. You will be redirected to their page, or the page that contains more detail for each stitch.

Basic Crochet Stitches

Chain Stitch (ch):

Create a slip knot. Yarn over and pull through loop. Continue yarning over and pulling through loop.

Slip Stitch (sl st or ss):

Foundation row - Do not skip any. Insert hook into hole. Yarn over and pull through both loops. You should only have one loop left on your hook.

Single Crochet (sc) Stitches:

Foundation row - skip 1. Insert hook into hole. Yarn over and pull the yarn through that loop. You will now have 2 loops over your hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops.

Double Crochet (dc) Stitches:

Foundation row - skip 2 or 3. Yarn over. Insert hook (one loop already on) into hole. Yarn over again. Pull loop through. You now have three loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through two loops. Yarn over and pull through both remaining loops.

Half Double Crochet (hdc) Stitches:

Foundation row - skip 2. Yarn over. Insert hook (one loop already on) into hole. Yarn over again. Pull loop through. You now have three loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through all 3 loops.

Treble Crochet (tr) Stitches:

Foundation row - skip 3 or 4. Yarn over twice. Insert your hook (two loops already on) into hole. Yarn over again. Pull loop through. You now have four loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through two loops. Yarn over again and pull through two loops. Yarn over and pull through both remaining loops.

Popcorn/Bobble Crochet (pop, pc or p/bo) :

Foundation row - Stitches are worked within a row. (5 unfinished dc in same space) YO. Insert hook (one loop already on) into hole. YO again. Pull loop through. You now have 3 loops on your hook. YO again and pull through 2 loops. YO again. Insert hook in same hole, YO. Pull loop through. You now have 4 loops on your hook. YO again and pull through 2 loops. (3 left on hook) YO again. Insert hook in same hole. YO. Pull loop through. You now have 5 loops on your hook. YO again and pull through 2 loops. (4 left on hook) YO again. Insert hook in same hole. YO. Pull loop through. You now have 6 loops on your hook. YO again and pull through 2 loops. (5 left on hook) YO again. Insert hook in same hole. YO. Pull loop through. You now have 7 loops on your hook. YO again and pull through 2 loops. (6 left on hook) YO. Pull through all 6 remaining stitches. (1 left on hook) Finish as pattern dictates: with additional locking chain stitch or next pattern stitch.

Shell/Fan Crochet:

Foundation row - skip 2 or 3 (Stitches are worked within a row). Usually secured with sc before and after. 5 complete double crochet stitches in same hole. (Sc, 5 dc, sc) or (sc, sk next st, 5 dc, sk next st, sc)
