The satin stitch is an unbroken straight stitch. It is used mostly to “fill in” larger stitching areas. It is a very simple, yet decorative stitch. If you change the directions of your stitches, you can get a different look from different types of embroidery floss. This can give this stitch a kind of holographic look.
Knot your thread. Insert your needle from behind in the desired starting point.
Insert your needle into the desired ending point. That’s it!
Continue creating your stitches very close together so that no fabric shows in between them. Vary your stitch width based on what you are trying to “fill in”. When you are finished with your last stitch, bring your thread to the back of your work and tie off to secure your ends. Try and keep your edges as straight and even as possible. This will keep your project looking nice and neat.
When you are doing curves and angles, just make sure the edge transition between stitches is smooth. No big jumps in the edges from one stitch to the other.
If you are using a satin stitch with a stamped template, or markings on the fabric, make sure to go just outside of the lines so that the marks will not show.
You can use this hand embroidery stitch to add a decorative touch to your projects by varying the different types of threads, yarns and ribbons you use.
For a really interesting look, try sewing with ribbon. Twist the ribbon a little before finishing the stitch. This will make the ribbon twist on the front of your project, giving it some dimension, and a really cool effect. Just make sure that the fabric underneath the ribbon is part of the effect, as it will show in between your ribbons. Keep the ribbon across the back side of your work flat so that your finished project will lay flat and not be full of lumps.
